The first time I crossed into Mississippi, I headed to Stovall's plantation. For me, Muddy's recordings are the birth of the blues as I learned them. This is the real deal--raw, soulful, authentic. Everyone has his own musical father; for me it was Muddy's early recordings/5(56).

Blues legend Muddy Waters, born McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, was a tractor driver and local blues guitarist when in fate intervened. The Library of Congress had started its series of field recordings of American traditional music and on a recording trip through the Delta, led by Alan Lomax and John Work III, they came upon the year-old Muddy and made music history.

out of 5 stars Muddy Waters' first recordings Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February If your idea of what a Muddy Waters tune should sound like is the cut-and-shuffle of "Hoochie Coochie Man" or the hard-hitting "I've Got My Mojo Working", the music on this album may come as a /5(46).

Muddy Waters’ legendary first recordings, cut at his house in Mississippi on portable equipment by a Library of Congress/Fisk University recording unit led by Alan Lomax and John W. Work III, were first collected on the revelatory LP Down on Stovall’s Plantation on Pete Welding’s Testament label and later released in an expanded set by MCA on the Chess CD The Complete Plantation.
